Reported crime in Wells fell during July, with police recording 89 offences and incidents across the city neighbourhood.

The total was down from 99 in June, a fall of ten reports, or just over 10 per cent. It was, however, higher than July 2025, when 78 crimes were recorded.

The biggest category during July was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 41 of the 89 reports — around 46 per cent of the monthly total.

That is a broad police category covering offences ranging from assaults and threats of violence to sexual offences. The figures do not show the circumstances or seriousness of individual cases, so the total should not be taken to mean all 41 incidents involved serious physical injury.

The second-largest category was anti-social behaviour, with 16 reports.

Anti-social behaviour can include nuisance, intimidating or threatening conduct, street disorder and other behaviour which causes harassment, alarm or distress. Not every anti-social behaviour report necessarily involves a separate criminal offence.

Police also recorded six shoplifting offences during July, covering theft from shops and other retail premises.

Shoplifting has remained a focus for Wells neighbourhood officers, with the policing team previously identifying High Street theft as one of its local priorities.

A further five public order offences were recorded. That category can include threatening or abusive behaviour, disorder and other offences involving conduct likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Together, violence and sexual offences, anti-social behaviour, shoplifting and public order accounted for 68 of the 89 reports recorded during the month.

The remaining 21 reports were spread across other police crime categories.

Looking at the wider trend, Wells recorded 118 crimes in August 2025, before falling sharply to 55 in September.

The monthly total then rose to 80 in October, 108 in November and 101 in December.

During 2026, police recorded 98 crimes in January, 68 in February, 91 in March, 80 in April and 59 in May before the total climbed to 99 in June and fell back to 89 in July.

Across the 12 months from August 2025 to July 2026, 1,046 crimes were recorded in the Wells City neighbourhood policing area.

The July figure therefore sits below several of the higher monthly totals seen during the past year, including August 2025, November and December.

The figures relate to crimes and incidents recorded within the Wells City neighbourhood policing area. They do not represent the number of people charged, prosecuted or convicted, and individual police categories can contain offences of very different circumstances and seriousness.
