Wells care home marks 100th birthday of resident Greta Sherring
By Ruth Cooke 10th Feb 2026
Crandon Springs Care Home in Wells has been celebrating a remarkable milestone as much-loved resident Greta Sherring turned 100 on 9th February.
Greta marked her centenary with a special party at Crandon Springs, surrounded by family, friends and staff. The celebration included a buffet lunch and birthday cake prepared by the home's chef team, along with plenty of presents and flowers.
The occasion was made even more memorable with the arrival of two very special birthday cards, one from King Charles and Queen Camilla, and another handmade cross-stitch card from the Crandon Springs team which was lovingly made for Greta by the mother of Activities Team staff member Kath, who got to know Greta over the past year. Both cards were special in their own way, just like Greta who commented: "I'm not sure where the time went! Now I'm 100 and friends with the King!"
Greta was born in Bristol on the 9 February 1926. She worked as a secretary before marrying Gerald and becoming a full-time mother and homemaker, a role she loved. She raised two children, Estelle and David, and now lives at Crandon Springs Care Home, close to her family.
Greta enjoys taking part in events and activities at Crandon Springs, and particularly loves outings in the home's minibus. Her enjoyment of trips led her to a memorable first recently when she joined five other residents as the care home entered the Wells City Carnival for the first time in November. The Crandon Springs' minibus took part in the procession under the them `Celebrating Life, Care and Community." Dressed in party glasses and a feather boa, Greta waved a pompom as the crowds cheered along the route. Reflecting on the experience, she said: "Well that was very enjoyable, and something different to do because I've never been to a carnival before!"
Meg Cleal, Crandon Springs General Manager, said: "Celebrating Greta's 100th birthday has been a real privilege. She brings warmth, humour, and spirit to our home and community, and we are delighted to have shared such a special occasion with her."
