The Britannia Inn has been officially recognised as an Asset of Community Value.

This significant decision came after Wells City Council responded to local residents' strong desire to preserve the pub, which has been vacant for over two years and is currently on the market with a guide price of £350,000.

The initiative to save the pub, affectionately known as 'The Brit', was propelled by the community's efforts to maintain its status as a local hub.

Somerset Council, upon thorough assessment, agreed that the Britannia Inn holds substantial community value.

The pub's details have now been added to the register of Assets of Community Value, and this update has been communicated to the Land Registry.

An asset of community value is land or property of importance to a local community which is subject to additional protection from development under the Localism Act 2011.  Once listed, if an Asset of Community Value comes up for sale, the community have an opportunity to make a bid to purchase the asset.

This new status opens a window of opportunity for the community to actively participate in preserving the future of the Britannia Inn.

A dedicated group of local residents has already stepped up, forming a steering group to explore viable options for purchasing the pub.
