Last open day of the season at Mendip Hospital Cemetery
Mendip Hospital Cemetery
Miscellaneous
UNTIL Sunday 25th September
This Sunday is the last of the regular open days at Mendip Hospital Cemetery for 2022.
The cemetery is the resting place for nearly 3,000 souls who were patients at the Asylum. They were paupers so their families were for the most part poor and could not afford a headstone but their graves are marked by numbered, iron markers.
There are three peaceful acres to explore with wild flowers, butterflies, beehives, dragonflies and more, and stunning views across the valley. The story of the Mendip Hospital, which opened in 1848 as the Somerset and Bath County Lunatic Asylum, is told in words and pictures in an exhibition in the chapel - find out what life was really like in the Victorian Asylum through patient stories and photographs.
This old cemetery was saved from destruction by the efforts of the people of Wells in 2002: there were plans to build houses here. Please help us to protect this very special place for the future by leaving a donation when you visit.
Find the cemetery just off Bath Road, Wells - the entrance gate is along Hooper Ave, by the Britannia Inn.
