Potter targets promotion as Wells City hit top form

Wells City manager Shaun Potter has declared promotion the target for his side this season, following a blistering run of form in the Western League First Division.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Jewson Western League Podcast, Potter said a club of Wells City's stature should always be aiming high. The team has scored nine goals and conceded none in their last two matches, climbing to second in the table.
"The start hasn't been perfect," Potter admitted, "but we're going in the right direction." He praised the squad's performance against Calne Town as a sign of growing cohesion, despite what he called a challenging pre-season.
Wells City adopted a long-term approach to summer recruitment, deliberately delaying squad cohesion to secure better players. "We've built a squad that I never thought I'd be able to build in this division," Potter said.
While pleased with the early momentum, the manager remains grounded, pointing to defeats against Bitton and Avonmouth as key learning moments. He described the division as a "mad, mad league" where every team is eager to knock Wells off course.
Wells face Bristol Telephones at home next, a fixture Potter expects to be "really difficult" against a side he believes could be a surprise package this season. He stressed that promotion is just the start of a bigger plan.
"I want to build a side that can compete next year so we don't have to completely revamp the squad in the summer," he said. "There's no point in being a manager or playing football if you're not going to try and be promoted and be the best you can be."
