Wells City came unstuck away to Calne Town at the weekend despite being ahead at half-time, and a missed penalty proved to be a turning point in the game.

Wells took the lead on 12 minutes as they went from defending a corner to scoring, as Charlie Crook got to the clearance first and set Harry Foster free with a glorious 60-yard pass. Foster then got in front of the defender and smashed home a half volley from 20 yards.

On 38 minutes, a lovely touch round the corner from Foster encouraged Crook into space, he then found Foster in the box but his shot went narrowly wide.

After 42 minutes, Alex Camm showed a great turn of pace down the right before finding Craig Herrod who turned his man but saw his shot go wide.

Just before half-time, Herrod returned the favour to Camm but again Camm saw his shot go wide after failing to connect with it properly. At half time Wells were 1-0 up.

Wells then got a penalty on 48 minutes when a driving run into the box by Herrod saw him fouled but the following penalty from Foster is saved by the Calne keeper. In all honesty Foster wouldn't have been happy with the penalty.

On 50 minutes there was a good chance for the Calne striker as he got himself space on the edge of the box but blazed well over.

After 55 minutes, a 40-yard free kick from Calne was parried by Harrison Veale and the Calne striker was quickest to react but his follow up is this time was smothered by Veale.

A quick free kick on 65 minutes from Wells saw Crook drive towards the box and power a shot at goal that took a deflection and the keeper did well to save.

Calne equalised on 70 minutes as they won an aerial battle deep into the Wells defensive third and, still with a lot to do, the Calne number 7 brilliantly turned and fired a shot into the far bottom corner.

Calne took the lead on 75 minutes when some good link up play by the Calne strikers saw their number 7 again finish superbly from just inside the area.

On 82 minutes, an even better finish from number 7 this time completed his hat-trick as he iwas afforded to much time on the edge of the box and he found the far top corner with an exquisite finish.

The first half was well contested and Wells just edged it but the second half Wells didn't turn up after the penalty miss and Calne fully deserved the victory.

Wells will need to bounce back as they entertain Oldland Abbotonians at home on Friday night.
