In one of their best performances for many years, Wells City triumphed 7-0 away to Corsham on Saturday, with five of the goals coming in a remarkable first 11 minutes.
They got the goal-scoring going in the very first minutes as straight from kick off Craig Herrod won the ball in Corsham's defensive third, he found Alex Camm through the middle who delicately lifted the ball over the central defender and into the path of Harry Foster who slotted the ball past the keeper and into the far right corner. There was a possibility of an offside but with no VAR present, Wells lead 1-0.
The second goal came after three minutes when another high press from Wells saw a Camm shot deflected wide, Foster didn't give it up and put a deft lobbed cross back over the Corsham defender and keeper which saw Ross Padfield with yet another headed goal from just inside the six-yard box. Wells 2-0.
Wells had the game almost won after just five minutes when Charlie Crook took a quick short corner to Herrod and his trickery saw him ghost past three defenders before pulling the ball back to Camm who swept the ball into the far corner to give Wells a 3-0 lead.
After seven minutes, once again a well-executed high press saw Brett Cotterill win the ball back before playing in Herrod, whose shot was deflected straight into the path of Foster and he made no mistake volleying the ball into the ground and back across the keeper into the far corner. Wells 4-0.
On 10 minutes, the wing wizard that is Herrod saw him once again dazzle the Corsham defenders before putting the ball on a plate for Camm and, similar to his first goal, Camm slotted the ball with precision accuracy into the far bottom corner. Wells five up within 11 minutes.
Herrod again was driving at the Corsham defence on 20 minutes which saw him cut inside on to his right foot but this time his effort went wide.
After 22 minutes, great play by Steve Sokol in the midfield to not only win the ball back but thread a brilliant ball to Foster, saw Foster through but unable to hit the target.
On 36 minutes and from a Wells corner, Corsham quickly went on a break and their striker was very unlucky as his quality effort was somehow hooked off the line by Keiran Davis after Harrison Veale did well to get a glove on it.
A Herrod free kick after 41 minutes from the right was powerfully met by Padfield but his effort was well saved.
After 44 minutes, a lunging Padfield tackle on the edge of the box was picked up by Veale and the referee adjudged it to be a back pass and gave Corsham a free kick eight yards out. From the resulting free kick, a Corsham player got involved with the defensive wall and the referee then awarded Wells a free kick which was a huge let off, making the score 5-0 to Wells at half time.
Wells started the second half well, and on 56 minutes Davis drove forward from left back, and with no pressure on him he unleashed a 25-yard rocket that just went over the bar.
The sixth goal came on 65 minutes when a brilliant 60-yard pass from Jack Spence found Herrod down the left channel, he then had the awareness to split the Corsham defence with a first time pass that was weighted to perfection for Foster to unleash a half volley past the keeper to give Wells a 6-0 lead.
On 70 minutes, a long pass forward from Davis was headed down to Foster from Tom Hill but this time Foster's effort landed on the top of the Corsham net.
A minute later, Foster tried to become the provider as his cushion header was met by an instant Camm volley from 20 yards but the Corsham keeper did well to hold it.
After 75 minutes, a clearance from Corsham fell to Crook from 20 yards and his volley flew just wide.
Wells then hit the woodwork on 78 minutes after some quality wide play by Crook saw him fire in a cross that was met by the head of Harvey Hadrill but his header smashed off the bar and was hooked clear.
The goal scoring was completed by man of the match Herrod on 82 minutes when some great individual play saw him get into the area before slotting the ball home.
It was a quite remarkable opening 11 minutes and an outstanding squad display with some brilliant football on display.
Man of the match went to Craig Herrod who was instrumental throughout and put the icing on the cake with his goal at the end.
Wells will be looking to build on this result when they entertain Bishops Lydeard at the Athletic Ground with a 3pm kick off.
