It was a Jekyll and Hyde performance from Wells City at the weekend as they were out-played and out-worked by Bishops Lydeard in the first 45 minutes but then in complete control for the second 45.
A 1-1 draw was a fair result given the balance of play and it was an entertaining game for the neutral.
Bishops Lydeard took the lead on seven minutes when a long ball out of the Lydeard defence saw Harrison Veale charge out of his box and half clear when under pressure. His clearance fell to the Lydeard midfielder who, from 35 yards and still with a lot to do, lobbed Veale as he backpedalled to goal and the ball found its way into the Wells net.
Lydeard continued to dominate the game and, on 18 minutes, in quick succession they saw a possible penalty appeal waved away after a strong challenge from Tom Hill and then they saw a golden chance blazed over from six yards.
After 30 minutes, another Lydeard chance saw the striker break into the Wells box but after his initial shot was blocked he then fired wide.
Wells got their first sin bin of the season on 38 minutes as Alex Camm was shown a yellow and told to sit out for 10 minutes for dissent.
Half time came with the score still Wells 0-1 Bishops Lydeard but the visitors were kicking themselves for not going in with a stronger lead.
Wells came out a different team and within two minutes of the second half Craig Herrod went on one of his trademark runs and his lobbed effort at goal landed on the roof of the net with the Lydeard keeper beaten.
Wells pulled level on 50 minutes when again Herrod drove at the Lydeard back four and his low cross was inadvertently sliced in to the net by a Lydeard defender.
On 54 minutes, some great individual work from Camm saw him cut in from the right and unleash a shot which the Lydeard keeper did well to tip wide.
After 56 minutes, a Lydeard free kick from the left was met with a powerful header but Veale redeemed himself with a brilliant one-handed save from point blank range to keep the scores level.
Wells were pushing hard for a winner and on 65 minutes saw efforts from Camm and Herrod from inside the box just saved by the Lydeard keeper.
On 80 minutes, a brilliant effort from Hunt from 20 yards was matched by a brilliant save.
With just five minutes left, Wells were close to taking all three points as a strong run from Hill saw him bring the ball from the halfway line all the way to the edge of the Lydeard box before unleashing a fierce left-footed strike towards the top corner of the goal, but again the Lydeard keeper somehow denied Wells with a fingertip save.
The game finished 1-1 and both teams could argue they should have won. Overall both teams deserved something from it and the game was certainly a great advert for the Western League and non-league football.
Wells face higher league opposition this Wednesday night (October 9) as they travel to Premier Division Wellington in the Somerset Premier Cup.
They then face another stern test as they travel to high flying Calne Town on Saturday (October 12) in an early top of the table clash.
