A pointless trip to Bath

Lots of effort, three tries, but in the end Wells came back from Bath pointless although this was a spirited performance by a much changed team which contained three Crooks - William, Jordan and Charles.

Wells went behind to a try after just a couple minutes and for the next half an hour Avon were definitely on top, using their driving maul to good effect. Will Greenman had opened the scoring for Wells with a twelfth minute penalty, but when Wells lost a scrum on their own put in, Avon rapidly moved the ball wide for a try. Minutes later a catch and drive saw them over the line again with a try which was converted. Suddenly Wells sprung into life, they started going through the phases and pressure on the Avon line saw Will Crook awarded the try. Ten minutes later, Mike Dimaline went over. Will Greenman converted, half time Avon seventeen, Wells fifteen.

After defending for ten minutes, or so Wells broke out and another penalty from Will Greenman put them into the lead by a point. A few minutes later, Wells supporters dared to hope as Ben and Al Knight combined to cover seventy metres for the latter to score. From then on it was a bit of doom and gloom as the light faded. The lights came on, but they seemed to inspire the home team who went over for three more tries, two coming from catch and drives at lineouts.

Late in the game Wells went seeking a fourth try which would give them a bonus point and also get them a losing bonus point, but it was not to be.

There were many fine performances from Wells, but once again Al Payne led by example and put in a huge amount of work, there was also the work rate and lineout jumping from Mike Dimaline to admire. Final score: Avon 34 – Wells 23

This week Wells are home to Burnham on Sea, the only team in the league with one hundred per cent record.
