Harry Foster got the only goal of the game, as Ross Padfield also starred for Wells City, as they defeated Bishop Sutton 1-0 on Boxing Day.

In the first minute of the match, good build up play down the Wells left saw the ball find Craig Herrod in the box but his snap shot went narrowly wide.

On eight minutes, after another quick Wells attack that saw the Bishop Sutton keeper thwart Foster, Bishop Sutton turned defence into attack and in the blink of an eye their Number 9 fired a low shot at goal which was deflected inches wide and out for a corner.

Wells took a deserved lead on 24 minutes when, after a dominant five-minute spell for Wells, Foster worked some space for himself in the box and rifled the ball into the top right corner.

On 32 minutes Wells were pushing hard for that second goal and Harvey Hadrill nearly got it as he drove at the Sutton defence but his effort from just inside the box was straight at the keeper.

After 38 minutes there was another chance for Wells, this time Charlie Crook did well to create space for himself on the edge of the box before his powerful shot was deflected just wide of the far left post.

Half time and the score remained Wells City 1-0 Bishop Sutton.

On 48 minutes Wells started where they left off with brilliant link up play between Padfield, Crook and Herrod with Herrod releasing Foster but he fired wide.

On the hour mark, a Herrod corner was met by Padfield but his header was straight at the keeper.

Two minutes later and another Herrod corner was this time met by Dale Hunt but again his header was saved.

After 72 minutes, a rapid Wells attack saw Foster latch on to a Herrod throughball with his pace rounding the keeper, but his shot was cleared off the line by the covering defender. From the resulting corner Ben Robertson headed over from eight yards.

On 74 minutes Foster let fly from 20 yards but his dipping effort was tipped over the bar. From the resulting Tom Hill corner, Padfield again rose highest but again the Bishop Sutton keeper was stood in the right place to deny Wells.

Bishop Sutton broke with purpose on 80 minutes and a low ball into the box was just about to be tapped in by the striker but Robertson managed to get a toe to it and steer the ball away from danger.

With four minutes left, Foster was freed by Crook and as he went one on one with the keeper he tried to poke the ball under him but the Sutton keeper got his glove to it and with that the covering defender had enough time to hook the ball clear before it crossed the line.

The final score was Wells City 1-0 Bishop Sutton.

Man of the match was Padfield for his tireless work rate and the way he dominated the midfield from start to finish putting Wells on the front foot at every opportunity.

It was a far more entertaining game than the scoreline suggests with Wells having the majority of the chances.

Wells will argue a 4-0 scoreline wouldn't have flattered them whereas Bishop Sutton would argue that for all their efforts a 1-1 draw wouldn't have flattered them.

You have to credit Bishop Sutton for pushing Wells all the way and they could have punished Wells for not being more ruthless in front of goal but Wells will nevertheless be happy with another clean sheet and three points to put further pressure on the top three.

Wells next play at home to fifth placed Sherborne on January 4, with a 3pm kick off.
