A woman from Wells has met the air ambulance crew that saved her life.
Last August, Andrea Hanwell was involved in an accident on Sadler Street which saw her leg crushed so badly she was given just a 20 per cent chance of survival.
And earlier this month Andrea was able to meet the Great Western Air Ambulance crew from that flew her from the Cathedral Green to Southmead Hospital.
"To meet these three wonderful young men who saved my life was really quite emotional," said Andrea. "Without their expert administrations and care I would not be here today. There are some wonderful people in the world.
"I was very fortunate that when the accident happened it was market day and that the ambulance was not far away," said Andrea. " I also found out later that there were 15 plain clothes policemen in the Market Place on an anti-terrorism exercise so they came to my aid too.
"I have actually recovered very quickly. My leg will never be quite the same again, but it works."
To thank the Great Western Air Ambulance Andrea set herself the target of raising £8,000 for the charity.
"When I was laying in bed recovering, I thought 'I will be 80 this year, so I will try to raise £8,000. I have now achieved that. Doing so has been an incredibly journey on which I have received donations not just from family and friends but also from complete strangers and people I haven't heard from in years. It has also brought me new friends of all ages which is a wonderful bonus. My cup runneth over!
"To each and everyone who has helped me reach my target may I say a very sincere and heartfelt thank you and, as the song entreats us, I shall keep trying to spread a little happiness as I go by."
