Wells is preparing for a solemn Remembrance weekend with services dedicated to honouring those who have served.

A brief Remembrance service is planned for Saturday, 11 November, at the Conduit in Market Square. Starting at 10.45am, the community is encouraged to come together to pay their respects.

On Sunday, 12 November, a more formal civic ceremony will commence at St Cuthbert's Church, culminating in a two-minute silence at the war memorial at 11am. Wreath-laying will follow, with a parade marching up High Street where the Mayor will take the salute before proceeding to the Harry Patch Memorial outside the Wells & Mendip Museum for an additional wreath-laying event.

In the lead-up to these sombre commemorations, The Bishop's Palace in Wells brings back the 'Somerset Poppies' display from 6-17 November. This striking installation serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in conflicts past and present.

For those looking to embrace culture and learning over the weekend, Wells offers a variety of activities. Pianist Ingrid Fliter will grace Cedars Hall with her 'Piano Masters' performance on Friday, 10 November. The following day, budding mathematicians can immerse themselves in numbers at the Wells Cathedral School from 9:30am to 3:30pm.

For the adventurous, 'Walk the High Parts 2023' offers a unique view of the city from Wells Cathedral's high vantage points between 11:15am and 1:00pm on Saturday.

Music lovers can enjoy 'Sacred and Operatic Choral Favourites' for free at Wells Cathedral from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, also on Saturday. That evening, the Wells & Mendip Astronomers will meet at the Wells & Mendip Museum from 7:30pm to 10:00pm for a night of stargazing and discussion.

Concluding the weekend, The White Hart hosts its 'Sunday sessions' offering a relaxed end to a busy weekend from 4:30pm to 7:00pm on Sunday.

Looking ahead, the community can anticipate the enchantment of the Wells Carnival on Friday, 17 November. This year's procession will feature the usual fantastic floats from local clubs, including Globe CC and Gorgons CC, each adding their own flare to the parade. Don't miss Mendip Vale's tribute to the Glam rock era, and Cobra's captivating Wild West adventure. Full details of the carnival can be found here.

With such a rich array of events, the weekend in Wells promises to blend solemn remembrance with community spirit and cultural enrichment.
