Wells City Council has agreed a balanced budget for 2026–27, setting a precept increase of 1.97%. The decision was approved by Full Council and keeps the rise below 2%, which the authority said is below inflation.

The council said the increase reflects what it described as a proactive approach to financial management during a period of rising costs. It added that the aim is to minimise the impact on households in Wells, while ensuring vital local services, events and community initiatives continue.

The agreed budget will allow the council to maintain and support community services, including those inherited from Somerset Council, deliver city events and markets, continue investment in local facilities and assets, strengthen community resilience and wellbeing initiatives, and build additional functionality into its business reserves.

The Mayor of Wells said: "Setting a precept of just 1.97% demonstrates our commitment to strong financial stewardship. We know households are facing ongoing pressures, and we have worked diligently to strike the right balance between affordability and maintaining the high standards our community expects. We also want residents to feel confident about how their Council Tax is structured and where their money goes."

The city council said its precept forms only one part of a typical Council Tax bill. The largest portion goes to Somerset Council, which funds services including adult and children's social care, education, highways, waste collection, housing and planning. Other elements include the Police and Crime Commissioner and Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority. The Wells precept funds highly local services and community activity within the city itself.

Residents can find further information about the council's budget and corporate priorities on the Wells City Council website. Council meetings are held at Wells Town Hall, with a calendar displayed at the building and online.
