Two businesses in Wells Market Place have applied to renew licences allowing them to use pavement space outside their premises.

ASK Italian, based at the Market Hall in Market Place, and Market Place Cafe, at 3 Market Place, are both seeking renewed pavement licences from Somerset Council.

The licence for ASK Italian is open for representations until Friday, 18 September, while comments on the Market Place Cafe application can be submitted until Thursday, 17 September.

Both applications are renewals rather than applications for entirely new pavement licences.

Pavement licences allow businesses such as cafés, restaurants and bars to place removable furniture on parts of the public highway, subject to approval and any conditions imposed by the licensing authority.

That can include tables and chairs used for customers eating or drinking outside, although the full details of what each Wells business is seeking are contained in the individual licence notices.

The applications come at a busy point for Market Place, which remains one of the city's main concentrations of cafés, restaurants and visitor businesses.

The area has also seen recent change, including the opening of Cornish Bakery in the former HSBC building at 1 Market Place this summer.

Neither of the two current pavement licence applications has yet reached the end of its representation period.

Somerset Council will consider any representations received before deciding whether the renewals should be granted and what conditions, if any, should apply.
