Somerset Wildlife Trust is calling on residents of Wells to contribute their views on the city's Climate Adaptation Plan through a newly launched survey.

The initiative, supported by Somerset Rivers Authority, invites residents to share their priorities and ideas for tackling climate change impacts in the community.

Finlay Clothier from Somerset Wildlife Trust encouraged residents to get involved, stating, "We will endeavour to make this information more accessible by uploading the plans to the Somerset Wildlife Trust website." He also provided a webpage for further information on the "Act to Adapt" plan for Wells, where the survey link can be accessed.

The Wells Climate Adaptation Plan is part of Somerset Wildlife Trust's larger "Act to Adapt" programme, which works with communities across Somerset to build resilience against climate threats. Through this programme, local groups are collaborating on strategies that address the increasing risks of flooding, drought, and extreme weather. The Trust has planned a series of community workshops and consultations, designed to ensure that the adaptation plan reflects the concerns and insights of local residents.

The draft plan already includes several focus areas, such as expanding green spaces, mitigating flooding, and enhancing emergency preparedness. Proposed projects include increased tree planting across Wells, improving drainage systems, and supporting the installation of water butts in public and private buildings. The plan also highlights community-led climate initiatives, encouraging residents to adopt sustainable practices and raising awareness through public events.

Natalie Barnett, Climate Adaptation Officer at Somerset Wildlife Trust, explained that the programme is about more than environmental measures: "We're building community while supporting local wildlife and promoting wellbeing. We want everyone in Wells to feel they have a voice in shaping the city's response to climate change."

Feedback from the survey will be used to fine-tune the adaptation plan before its official launch at a community event. The event will not only introduce the plan but also offer residents ways to get involved in implementing climate adaptations for the city.

To participate, residents can complete the short online survey available through Somerset Wildlife Trust's website or attend one of the upcoming community workshops.
