Wells police target women’s safety in city centre
By Laura Linham 22nd May 2026
Wells police are working with city centre venues, salons and schools as part of a push to improve safety for women and girls.
The Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team has made Violence Against Women and Girls, known as VAWG, one of its local priorities.
Officers are focusing on the night-time economy, with pubs, bars and other local venues being encouraged to take part.
Police say the aim is to help make Wells safer for everyone using the city in the evening and at night.
The team has also visited local hairdressers and nail bars to share advice and information.
Officers have been promoting the Walk and Talk scheme, which gives women and girls the chance to meet police and talk through areas where they feel unsafe.
The scheme allows those taking part to walk with officers through their own community and explain their concerns first-hand.
Police say that feedback can help shape local patrols and safety work.
Beat surgeries have also been held at busy locations around Wells, giving residents a chance to speak directly to the neighbourhood team.
Officers have also visited local schools to talk to young people about personal safety, healthy relationships and where to find support.
Residents can also use StreetSafe to report places where they feel unsafe.
Reports can be made anonymously and may include concerns such as poor lighting, anti-social behaviour or harassment.
The information is shared with police and local authorities so it can be considered as part of local safety work.
