Planned gas works on the A371 between Cheddar and Wells are being moved after concerns were raised about the impact on local businesses.

Wells and Mendip Hills MP Tessa Munt said she and Somerset Councillor Ros Wyke met Wales & West Utilities yesterday morning to discuss the planned six-week closure.

Ms Munt said the summer holiday timing would have caused serious problems for businesses in Wells, Cheddar and along the route.

Later that day, she said they were told by the council that Wales & West Utilities would move the works to another time.

Ms Munt described the decision as "such good news for everyone in Wells, Cheddar and every business en route".

Wales & West Utilities is due to hold a drop-in session at Draycott Memorial Hall on Tuesday for anyone wanting more information.

No new date for the works has yet been confirmed.
