Wells man’s mission to walk the length of Italy for grieving children nears emotional finale

A Wells man who set out to walk the length of Italy for charity is preparing to take the final steps of his epic 2,000km journey — all to help children facing the heartbreak of bereavement.
Paul James, a retired teacher and now a volunteer for children's grief charity Winston's Wish, has already covered 1,800km on foot, travelling solo with just a backpack from the Swiss border to the south of Bari.
In September, he'll return to Italy to complete the final 250km stretch of the southern Via Francigena, finishing at Santa Maria di Leuca on the heel of the Italian peninsula.
Paul, who lost his own father just before his 14th birthday, says the experience shaped his life — and not in a good way.
"We were heartbroken," he said. "But it wasn't until much later I realised just how badly we'd been affected. If we'd had the right support, things could have been very different."
Now a Volunteer Community Ambassador for Winston's Wish, Paul has raised more than £8,500 so far — and he's not stopping yet.
The charity supported more than 82,000 grieving children and young people last year alone. Paul helps spread awareness by visiting schools, giving talks and attending local events.
"Our mission is simple," he said. "No child should have to face grief alone."
Paul will set off for the final leg of his walk on 19 September, reaching the finish line on 28 September. He's sharing daily updates via Instagram at @pauljjames58 and his JustGiving page.
He's also hoping that businesses in Somerset will come forward to offer sponsorship. Those interested can contact him via [email protected].
