Wells is getting a brand new retirement development – and it's named after a man who helped build the city's most iconic landmark more than 800 years ago.

Churchill Living has unveiled the name of its exclusive new Lodge in the heart of Wells – Adam Lock Lodge – in honour of a medieval master mason who left his mark on the breathtaking Wells Cathedral.

Adam Lock, who worked on the cathedral between 1192 and 1230, is credited with designing the stunning north porch and is believed to be the earliest named mason to shape the historic site. His legacy is literally set in stone – his bust can still be seen watching over the triforium today.

The name for the new development wasn't plucked from thin air – it was suggested by David Bevan, a local history buff and Digital Services & Marketing Officer at Wells Cathedral. Now, his idea is set to welcome a whole new generation of Wells residents.

The lodge, aimed at over-60s looking for stylish, low-maintenance living, will feature 47 one- and two-bedroom apartments, each with its own front door for maximum privacy. But it's not all bricks and mortar – residents will also have access to a fancy Owners' Lounge with a coffee bar, landscaped gardens, and a Guest Suite for friends and family. A full-time Lodge Manager will also be on hand.

Churchill's Jo Ridehalgh said: "We're thrilled to honour a key figure from Wells' rich past. Adam Lock Lodge offers the perfect mix of history, community and modern comfort – right in the heart of one of England's most charming cities."
