Whether you’re a foodie, a family looking for a fun day out, or someone passionate about local food issues, this year’s Wells Food Festival had something for everyone.

Wells Food Festival returned on Sunday, 13 October, and it certainly lived up to expectations as one of Somerset's most anticipated events.

From 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, the city was alive with the sights, sounds, and irresistible smells of locally-produced food and drink, bringing together thousands of visitors from across the South West for a day of culinary delights.

With over 200 artisan food and drink producers, the festival took over the city's Market Place, Town Hall, Bishop's Palace Green, the recreation ground, and, for the first time, Wells High Street, which was closed to traffic. This expanded footprint gave the event a more bustling atmosphere than ever before, making it easy to see why it has become such a staple in the local calendar.

A foodie's paradise

The sheer variety on offer was overwhelming in the best way possible. From Somerset cheeses to freshly baked pies, handmade chocolates, and award-winning English wines, there was something to suit every palate. A particular highlight was the English Wine Marquee on Palace Green, where visitors had the chance to sample local wines and chat with vineyard owners. The atmosphere in this area was relaxed and sophisticated, and the tasting sessions were a popular feature throughout the day.

Street food lovers were in for a treat, with stalls offering gourmet burgers, wood-fired pizzas, and international cuisine. Returning favourites like Ah-Ma's Dumplings and Passion & Smoke did not disappoint, drawing long queues throughout the day. Soul Dough's wood-fired pizzas were another standout, with their combination of crispy bases and fresh toppings making them well worth the wait.

Fun for all the family

The festival wasn't just about food – it catered to all ages, with a dedicated Children's Zone in the recreation ground offering crafts, cooking workshops, and even a scavenger hunt. The Fun Kitchen cookery workshops were a big hit, allowing children as young as three to get hands-on with making Apple Cinnamon Swirls. It was a joy to watch their faces light up as they created their own culinary masterpieces.

The Children's Trail was another thoughtful addition, encouraging younger visitors to explore the festival while learning about food and sustainability. The scavenger hunt added an extra layer of excitement for families, and those who completed the trail were rewarded with a small prize.

A focus on food issues

The Food for Thought Marquee also returned, bringing attention to important issues like food poverty and waste. Local organisations, including Wells Foodbank and Shepton Mallet Community Fridge, provided useful information about their initiatives, and it was heartening to see a festival that not only celebrated food but also tackled the pressing issues surrounding it.

Live entertainment and atmosphere

The music throughout the day added to the festival's upbeat atmosphere, with live performances scattered around the event. The Harlem Rhythm Cats swung their way through classic tunes, keeping spirits high near the bandstand, while over at Palace Green, local musician Sam Evans provided a perfect blend of swing, soul, and blues. The Wells Cathedral School and Millfield School pupils also impressed with their performances, showing off the musical talent in the area.

Final thoughts

Wells Food Festival 2024 was a triumph. The festival managed to strike a perfect balance between showcasing the best of local produce, providing family-friendly entertainment, and addressing serious food-related issues. The event's expansion into Wells High Street added to the atmosphere, and the variety of food and drink on offer was exceptional.

Whether you're a foodie, a family looking for a fun day out, or someone passionate about local food issues, this year's Wells Food Festival had something for everyone. It's safe to say that Wells Food Festival has cemented its place as a must-visit event in Somerset's calendar, and we're already looking forward to next year.
