Community organisations and charities in Wells have been invited to apply for a share of a £2 million fund aimed at combating fuel poverty this winter.
The Community Matters Fund, established by National Grid Electricity Distribution, is now open for the latest round of applications.
Originally set up in 2021 to respond to the urgent cost-of-living crisis, the fund has since supported over 900 grassroots projects. For this phase, National Grid is calling on charities, local councils, and community groups in Wells to apply for grants of up to £10,000. These funds will be used to help residents in the area save on energy costs, keep their homes warm, and find warm community spaces during the colder months.
Chris Hayton, Director of Corporate Affairs at National Grid, said: "Unfortunately, many families will be continuing to struggle with the costs of keeping their homes warm this coming winter. Our fund aims to alleviate fuel poverty and offer crucial support to those most in need. Projects that gain funding will directly assist in implementing energy-efficient measures, thus contributing to the overall wellbeing and resilience of our communities."
Potential uses for the grants include:
- Offering advice on energy tariffs and helping residents access other funding schemes such as winter fuel discounts.
- Implementing energy-efficient measures for those struggling with fuel poverty.
- Operating a 'Warm Bank' in community buildings.
- Making improvements in community spaces to make them more energy-efficient.
- Providing 'warm packs' which may contain items like radiator bleed keys, heavy curtains, blankets, and radiator foil.
The Community Matters Fund is also keen on supporting innovative approaches to address fuel poverty in Wells. Registered charities, community organisations, and local councils are all eligible to apply. The application form is available at www.nationalgrid.co.uk/community-matters-fund and the closing date for submissions is Friday, 27th October.
