Wells issues formal notice for St Thomas’ Ward council seat after loss of Tony Robbins
By Laura Linham 13th Mar 2026
A vacant seat has been declared on Wells City Council in St Thomas' Ward following the passing of Cllr Tony Robbins.
A formal notice issued by the council confirms the vacancy and sets out the next steps for filling the seat.
Under local government rules, a by-election will only be held if ten electors from the ward submit a written request within 14 working days of the notice being issued.
If fewer than ten requests are received during that period, the council will fill the position by co-option, meaning a new councillor would be appointed rather than elected.
The notice says requests for an election should be sent to Somerset Council's Electoral Services team and do not have to arrive at the same time.
It was signed by Wells City Council parish clerk Haylee Wilkins and dated Wednesday, 11 March 2026.
That means residents in St Thomas' Ward have 14 working days from that date to request that a by-election be held.
