Wells Fire Station's annual open day, held on Saturday, 7th September, attracted a strong turnout, offering local residents a hands-on experience with the city's emergency services.
The event, which ran from 10am to 4pm, gave the public the chance to meet not only the Wells firefighters but also members of the police, ambulance service, and St John Ambulance.
Attendees were able to tour the fire engines, try out some of the equipment, and speak directly with serving firefighters about their roles. For the children, there was the chance to dress up in fire kit and try their hand at rolling out hoses, while adults tested their accuracy with water rescue throw lines. A wet sponge throwing contest, with firefighters in the stocks, raised money for the Fire Fighters Charity, adding a light-hearted touch to the day.
Other emergency services were on hand to provide further activities and information. The local Neighbourhood Policing Team offered free bike marking through the national Bike Register scheme, helping cyclists protect their bicycles from theft. St John Ambulance also provided first aid demonstrations, adding to the day's educational value.
An on-site raffle helped raise additional funds, while families enjoyed the warm weather and a range of engaging activities. The event was hailed as a success, with participants showing strong support for the fire station and local emergency services.
A Wells firefighter expressed gratitude for the community's involvement, saying, "It was fantastic to see so many people from Wells and the surrounding area come out and engage with us and our colleagues in the police and ambulance services. The funds raised for the Fire Fighters Charity are greatly appreciated, and the day provided a great chance for everyone to learn about the work we do."
