A Wells charity that supports older people is calling for help after Somerset Council stopped its funding due to a lack of money.

The Lawrence Centre, which offers activities and meals for older people – many with memory or health issues – has lost its council grant and now operates with no state funding.

The centre is open five days a week and one Saturday a month, providing music, singing, arts and crafts and chair‑based exercise, as well as a freshly cooked lunch. It also offers an outreach service, visiting people in their own homes.

Chris Hall will cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats in July to raise money for the centre, a challenge staff say will make a vital difference.

"We have been badly impacted by the loss of the council grant and have no state funding," said Maggie Charlesworth of The Lawrence Centre. "We support older people, many of whom have memory or other health issues, as well as those who are socially isolated. We work hard to give them a fun, uplifting and stimulating day, and everyone goes home with a smile."

The charity is inviting people to visit and learn more about its work.
