Wells celebrates local heroes: Honouring the heartbeat of our community

Wells City Council recently celebrated the outstanding contributions of local individuals, groups, and businesses with its Civic Awards, acknowledging those who have made a significant difference in the community.

The awards were handed out at a gala evening held at the Town Hall on Friday, January 12, where the following recipients were honoured:

  • Citizen of the Year: Philip Welch was recognised for his remarkable involvement with ten local charities, his efforts in organising various events, and his overall contribution to the wellbeing of the city. Described as omnipresent and always ready to make a difference, Welch's dedication to Wells has been exemplary.
  • Volunteer of the Year: Emma Lefevre was awarded for her tireless work with Project Factory and Wells Community Network. Her efforts in organising community events and mobilising people and organisations have greatly benefited Wells' citizens.
  • Community Organisation of the Year: Wells Community Network was honoured for its diverse community work, including support for the Covid vaccination drive, assistance to Ukrainian refugees, and the innovative trishaw project.
  • Business of the Year: Wells Voice, a local news outlet, was recognised for its crucial role in keeping residents informed, supporting local events, and fostering a stronger community.
  • Senior Sportsperson of the Year: Thomas Palacio received the award for his extraordinary achievement of running three marathons in three days to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research, inspired by a personal loss.
  • Junior Sportsperson of the Year: Reuben Ashton was honoured for his multi-sport talents, including playing hockey for Somerset, football for Wells City Under-16s, participating in cricket, swimming, and maintaining a notable golf handicap.
  • Young Person of the Year: Six-year-old Archie Sanguinetti was recognised for his kindness and initiative in selling toys to raise money for The Lawrence Centre charity.
  • Environmental Champion: Maddy Milnes was awarded for her dedication to environmental efforts, including supporting neighbours to plant wildflower verges and leading a project to naturalise the verges along Tor Hill Lane.
  • Extra Mile Award: Kevin Westwood was celebrated for over 34 years of outstanding support to many in Wells, a testament to his unwavering commitment to helping others.
