Wells Cathedral has announced the introduction of an admission fee starting from 22nd April 2024, in a bid to safeguard the future of this historic Somerset icon.

Tickets to enter the building will cost £14 for an adult, and those under the age of 18 can enter for free.

But there is some good news for local - two special passes have been introduced: the Wells Cathedral Parish Pass and the Wells Cathedral Residents' Pass. These initiatives ensure that locals can continue to enjoy free access to the cathedral.

The move aims to generate the necessary funds for the cathedral's upkeep, with the daily maintenance costs hitting a staggering £4,500.

A spokesperson for the Cathedral said: "It is our responsibility to maintain and care for Wells Cathedral and all it offers to the community for future generations.

"However, the Cathedrals of the Church of England receive limited funding from the church and government and rely on donations, legacies and grants as well as the income they can generate for themselves.

"From Monday 22 April 2024 this means we will ask adult tourism visitors to contribute to the upkeep with an admission charge.

"There will never be a charge for people who wish to come into the Cathedral to pray, attend a service or light a candle; everyone is welcome."

For the Locals: How to Secure Your Free Access

Wells Cathedral Parish Pass: This pass is available to parishioners on the electoral roll or Cathedral Community Roll within the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Individuals must apply separately and provide proof of address for each application. The pass is valid for the length of the current electoral roll period, offering an extended opportunity for locals to engage with the cathedral's offerings. Applications can be made via a form obtained from the cathedral's Welcome Desk or through its website.

Wells Cathedral Residents' Pass: Aimed at residents within the City of Wells' parish boundaries, this pass provides free access to the cathedral. To apply, residents must present a form of address ID at the Welcome Desk, where the pass will be processed.

The cathedral has pledged to honour all group bookings made before the 22nd of April 2024 at current prices.
