Wells Cathedral will host five days of classical music this week as the Sound of Wells Festival returns to England's smallest city.

The festival runs from Wednesday, May 6 to Sunday, May 10, celebrating the choirs, musicians and ensembles connected with Wells Cathedral.

This year's programme will also shine a spotlight on the Cathedral's historic Grand Organ, which is currently undergoing a major restoration.

Several events will support the once-in-a-generation project.

They include a screening of Buster Keaton's 1926 silent film The General, with live organ accompaniment from Dr David Bednall, on Wednesday, May 6.

A major performance of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 will follow on Thursday, May 7, featuring the Monteverdi String Band, English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, soloists and Wells Cathedral Chamber Choir.

Festival Director Timothy Parsons said: "Over the course of five inspiring days, we invite you to celebrate the rich and vibrant musical life of Wells Cathedral.

"Throughout the festival, you'll hear performances from the Cathedral's choirs and musicians, as well as our many associated ensembles who help keep music at the heart of this special place all year round."

Other highlights include lunchtime concerts, choral evensong services, a musical outreach concert with local primary pupils, and An Evening of Concertos at Cedars Hall.

The festival closes on Sunday, May 10, with Cathedral Eucharist featuring the world premiere of a new Missa Brevis by Cheryl Frances Hoad, a composers' masterclass, Festival Evensong and bellringing.

Ticketed events include The General, Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 and An Evening of Concertos.

Other concerts and services are free or included with Cathedral entry, with retiring collections.
