Wells’ Bishop’s Palace wins national award for top-class volunteer support

Wells' historic Bishop's Palace has landed a top national award for the way it looks after its army of volunteers.
The Palace has been officially handed the Investing in Volunteers quality mark – the UK's gold standard for volunteer management. It's a big win for the 192 locals who give up their time to keep the landmark running, from greeting visitors to digging flowerbeds and leading school tours.
Inspectors spent months reviewing how the Palace recruits, supports and develops its volunteers – and gave it full marks across the board.
Siobhan Goodwin, Community Engagement Manager, said: "We are delighted to receive this award. It recognises our work over many years to make volunteering here a really good experience. We hope this encourages even more people to join us. We're also happy to share what we've learned with other local groups."
Volunteers are at the heart of the Bishop's Palace – helping with events, education, conservation, and creating a warm welcome for thousands of visitors each year.
The UK Volunteering Forum, which hands out the award, said: "The Bishop's Palace and Gardens have shown real commitment to volunteering. They've proven their policies and procedures meet nationally recognised standards."
The Palace Trust, which manages the site, is keen to grow the team. Roles are open to everyone – whether you've got green fingers, a love of heritage, or just want to give back.
