Wells Art Contemporary returns with bold new theme and local talent centre stage

The Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) exhibition is back at Wells Cathedral this autumn, bringing a world-class showcase of art to the heart of the city from 8 October to 1 November.
A highlight of this year's programme is the return of the Installations, featuring 22 site-specific artworks set throughout the Cathedral and gardens. Carefully selected for how they respond to the unique setting and this year's special theme — Flowing Light — the works promise to spark reflection and conversation.
The theme, proposed by Dean of Wells Cathedral Toby Wright, draws inspiration from 13th-century mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg and her luminous spiritual writing. The judging panel praised artists for responding "with incredible sensitivity and verve."
Three Somerset artists were shortlisted this year, including Fiona Campbell from Shepton Mallet, whose installation Threads of Light will take pride of place in the Chapter House. The work explores humanity's connection with forests and climate, rooted in themes of sustainability and ancient knowledge.
Frome-based artists Andrea Wright and Jane Sheppard also feature, with Sheppard's ceramic piece Guardians set to be a visual standout.
Meanwhile, The Gallery in the Cathedral cloisters will display 93 selected artworks from more than 2,000 global entries, across a wide range of mediums. Organisers say it's one of the strongest years yet for submissions, promising a show more often associated with a major metropolitan gallery.
