Over 40 volunteer drivers attended a special event this week to mark the thousands of miles they travel each year driving people from across Somerset to vital medical appointments.

After listening to a presentation by Road Safety experts, the volunteer drivers were each awarded a certificate by Cllr John Woodman, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Somerset County Council in recognition for volunteering and 'going that extra mile'.

Drivers had come from across Somerset for the celebratory event with many volunteer driving for Somerset County Council for several years.

Volunteer driver David said: "Somebody told me about vulnerable people struggling and I wanted to help. It's interesting. You meet all kinds of different people in different situations. You're contributing to your community."

Grateful comments received from those who use volunteer drivers include: "We don’t know what we would do without this service. The people are fantastic and friendly," and "Every person I have met has been extremely kind and helpful – it was a real pleasure to meet everyone. They do a difficult job with great care and cheerfulness towards everyone."

Cllr John Woodman, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Somerset County Council said: "It was a real privilege to attend the celebratory event and thank so many volunteer drivers for their dedication and commitment in giving up their own spare time to help others. Time and time again we receive heartfelt thanks from those they help who otherwise may not have been able to travel to vital medical appointments."

Volunteer drivers use their own four-door transport and take eligible clients to and from non-emergency hospital, social care and other appointments. They commit to at least one to two full days a week and must be aged over 18. Mileage expenses are reimbursed at up to 50p per mile.
