Everyone will be a winner in Wells this Saturday lunchtime

By Guest 16th Jul 2021

Four more SOUPer troupers will walk away with a cheque tomorrow (Saturday, October 5th).

Each good cause will also have the opportunity to publicise their work.

The event is Wells SOUP, which follows a similar but gentler pattern to TV's Dragons' Den with charities the beneficiaries rather than entrepreneurs.

SOUP is a quarterly grant-giving lunch where you enjoy tasty food and good company in the Connect Centre at the junction of Chamberlain Street and Portway.

It starts at 1pm and lasts about an hour. All are welcome.

"SOUP is a brilliant way to help improve where we live," said Ross Young from Wells Independents who organise the event.

"It is about bringing people together, having fun and supporting projects that benefit the community. More than 50 local good causes have benefited financially from SOUP already.

"£5 gets you delicious soup, fresh bread, a drink and a vote.

"Each good cause has four minutes to share their idea, showing how it will benefit the Wells community – with no PowerPoint or other technology allowed, but passion is welcome.

"The audience then ask questions and vote on which project they think will benefit the Wells area the most.

"Whichever presenter gets the most votes wins half the money collected at the door, match-funded by sponsorship.

"The runners-up share the other half. So all four come away with new funds."

The four good causes taking part are Blue School Plastic Free, Alzheimer's Society, Promise Works and Stoma Heroes.

Blue School Plastic Free and Eco Group drives to make the school as environmentally friendly as possible to act as a benchmark for other schools in Somerset and beyond.

Promise Works recruits, trains, match and support volunteer mentors for disadvantaged Somerset youngsters.

Stoma Heroes raise awareness and remove stigma of having an osteomy.

Alzheimer's Society provides information and support for people affected by dementia.

The two choices of soup will be made by the talented young chefs at Wells Blue School, whose catering manager Lisa Western said: "Our students are part of the community and we at the school like to give something back by supporting Wells SOUP."

The sponsors are Bowley's Garage of Westfield Road, Wells.
