More than a year after a fire tore through Tramways, there are finally signs of life inside the much-missed Wells social club.

In a long-awaited update, the club's committee confirmed that work is now visibly underway. They recently met on site to see progress for themselves — and for the first time in months, it's good news.

The roof, which was originally thought to need a full replacement, is instead being repaired and refurbished. That decision is expected to save valuable time. Initial electrical installation is also complete, and work has begun on insulating and plasterboarding the ceiling.

"The committee met in the club recently to see first-hand the work being carried out," the update said. "The roof has been repaired and the initial electrical installation has been completed. The ceiling has started to be insulated and plasterboarded."

The fire broke out in April 2024, tearing through the bar and into the roof. Four fire engines were called to the scene, and the cause was never fully determined, according to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

Since then, the club has remained closed, with progress repeatedly delayed by insurance decisions and negotiations with the landlord. While work has now begun, the building remains under the landlord's control — and there's still no firm reopening date.

Photos shared by the committee show visible progress, but they also reveal how much work remains. Once the building is handed back, the committee will begin the internal fit-out — but no timescale has been confirmed.

"We will continue to keep you updated," the committee said. "Many thanks for your patience."
