Lib Dem candidate wins St Cuthbert’s by-election in Wells

Wells City Council has welcomed a new member following last week's by-election in the St Cuthbert's ward, where Liberal Democrat candidate Cllr Edmonds was elected with 268 votes.
The poll, held on Thursday 17 July, saw five candidates stand for the vacant seat. Cllr Edmonds emerged as the clear winner, with independent candidate Bernard Mealing coming second on 176 votes. Conservative Sebastian Johns received 136, Green Party candidate Peter Welsh took 53, and Labour's Andy Merryfield received 32.
The turnout for the election was 18.10%, with polling open from 7am to 10pm.
In a statement, Wells City Council said: "Councillors and staff of the City Council welcome Cllr Edmonds to the team. We look forward to working with her on behalf of the residents of St Cuthbert's ward and the wider Wells community."
Cllr Edmonds will formally take her seat following her Acceptance of Office.
