Police in Wells have issued a warning following a surge in tool thefts from vans over several months.

The majority of these incidents occurred when vans were left unlocked and unattended, according to authorities.

A police spokesperson said, "We're urging van owners in Wells to be extra vigilant and always lock their vans when they're not in company with them. It's crucial to activate your van's alarm system as well. We continue to collaborate with the force intelligence team and Sedgemoor CCTV, and we strongly encourage anyone who sees suspicious activity to call 999 immediately."

In light of the rising incidents, here are some tips for keeping your tools safe:

  1. Always lock your van when it's unattended, even for a short period.
  2. Activate the vehicle's alarm system whenever possible.
  3. Consider marking your tools with a UV pen or engraving them to help with identification if stolen.
  4. Install CCTV or motion-sensitive lighting near where your van is parked overnight.
  5. Keep an inventory of your tools, including photographs and serial numbers, to assist police in case of theft.
  6. Never leave tools in plain sight; store them in a secure tool box within the van.
