Samantha Peacock, a stonemason from Cliveden Conservation's Bath Workshop, has been honoured with an award at the prestigious Duke of Gloucester Awards 2023 in London.

The award, a testament to her skill and dedication, highlights her significant contribution to the craft, particularly her work on the iconic Wells Cathedral medieval clock.

The Duke of Gloucester Awards, presented by the Duke himself in partnership with the Worshipful Company of Masons, are a mark of distinction in the world of stonemasonry. They acknowledge the exceptional craftsmanship and commitment of individual masons or small teams. Samantha was recognised for her outstanding skills and extensive experience, receiving a 'Commended' award in the second category for masons with over ten years of experience.

Her journey in stonemasonry, which began at Bath College where she achieved an NVQ Level 3 in the field, culminated in a Masters' Degree in the Archaeology of Buildings. Samantha's prestigious William Morris Craft Fellowship win in 2012 further cemented her status in this skilled trade.

The Wells community is particularly proud of her contributions to the Wells Cathedral, which featured prominently in her award-winning portfolio. Her meticulous work on the Cathedral's medieval clock pedestals and the conservation of its West Front figures showcase not only her technical skills but also her deep respect for historical preservation.

Tom Flemons, Director and Manager of the Bath Workshop at Cliveden Conservation, who nominated Samantha for the award, said: "I first met Sam when I was on the judging panel for the SPAB William Morris Craft Fellowship in 2012. Her enthusiasm and passion for the craft shone through and was one of the qualities that made it an easy choice to select her.

"Fast forward to 2023, Sam has been working for Cliveden Conservation for over a year and achieving impressive results. Her work to the West Front of Wells Cathedral was outstanding. Working in collaboration with the cathedral architect Sam strove to keep as much of the original fabric as possible and executed tight masonry and carving which matched seamlessly with the adjacent original fabric. I am thrilled she has won this prestigious award which is testimony to her excellent tool skills and eye for detail."
