Several businesses in Wells and the surrounding area have received food hygiene ratings of three or below, following inspections by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

While these ratings meet the minimum standard, they also highlight areas for improvement to ensure higher food safety standards.

The FSA's hygiene rating system evaluates three key areas: the hygienic handling of food, cleanliness and the condition of facilities, and the management of food safety. Scores range from 0 to 5, with 5 being the highest. A rating of 3 is classified as "generally satisfactory," but lower ratings indicate the need for further action.

In Wells, Worth House B&B received a rating of 2 during an inspection on 19 March 2024. While inspectors noted good standards in food handling and cleanliness, the management of food safety was flagged as needing major improvement.

The Ring O' Bells pub on High Street, Wookey, was rated 2 after an inspection on 12 August 2024. Inspectors found food handling and management of food safety to be satisfactory but highlighted the need for improvements to the cleanliness and condition of the facilities.

Several establishments received ratings of 3, indicating that while they meet basic standards, there is still scope for improvement. These include:

  • Lower Haydon Farm B&B in Haydon, which was last inspected on 18 December 2020. Inspectors found all areas to be generally satisfactory.
  • Thai Dragon on Sadler Street in Wells, inspected on 17 October 2023, with satisfactory ratings across the board.
  • The George Inn in Croscombe, inspected on 4 September 2023, which also achieved satisfactory ratings in all categories.
  • Wookey Hub on High Street, Wookey, inspected on 29 November 2023. While food handling and safety management were satisfactory, the cleanliness of the premises was rated as good.

Food hygiene ratings are a useful guide for consumers to make informed choices about where to dine or shop. Businesses with lower scores are required to address their shortcomings and may face further inspections to ensure compliance.

For those establishments needing improvement, taking action now will help raise standards and restore public confidence in their food safety practices. Customers can check ratings for local businesses on the Food Standards Agency's website.
