Plans to expand Little Wellies Nursery at Wells Cathedral School have been given the go-ahead, promising more space and improved facilities for the youngest members of the school community.

Somerset Council has approved the project, which will see a single-storey extension added to the existing building, tucked away in the grounds of Polydor House.

The nursery's new design, submitted by DB+Paul Chartered Building Surveyors, takes inspiration from its branding, "Little Wellies," with a unique curved exterior resembling a Wellington boot.

It's not just about appearances, though—the extension will house a new classroom, revamped internal spaces, and a sheltered entrance for drop-offs and pick-ups. The changes aim to make life easier for staff, parents, and most importantly, the children.

The project will breathe new life into the nursery, which already prides itself on offering an environment designed to inspire creativity and a love of learning. The new classroom will provide additional capacity, while the redesigned layout will improve the flow of the building, with glazed doors ensuring visibility and light throughout the space. Outside, the nursery's all-weather play area will be renewed and extended, keeping outdoor fun at the heart of the experience.

Despite its location near Polydor House, a Grade II* listed building, the modern extension has been carefully planned to respect the site's heritage. By opting for a contemporary design, the school aims to create a striking contrast that complements its historic surroundings while continuing its tradition of innovative architecture.

The council's decision to approve the application acknowledges the growing demand for high-quality early years provision. With this expansion, Wells Cathedral School is set to strengthen its reputation for offering a forward-thinking approach to education, with facilities that match its ambitions.

Construction is expected to start soon, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Little Wellies Nursery. For families and children at the school, the extension will not only mean more space but also an even better place to learn, play, and grow.
