Somerset's unsung heroes and charities are to be honoured at a special, multi-faith service to celebrate volunteering with the support of wonderful singing from both Wells Cathedral and Volunteer Choirs.

Somerset High Sheriff Johnnie Halliday has, together with the Dean and Chapter of Wells Cathedral, invited volunteers, charities and supporters to this unique celebration in order to shine a light on the extraordinary dedication and commitment they have shown in their communities. So far nearly 600 people are expected at the service.

Somerset High Sheriff Community Awards will be presented to outstanding volunteers who have provided exceptional service to the county or local community (earlier examples of awards below).

"During my year as High Sheriff it has been a great honour to meet many charities and individuals who freely give their time, share their skills and provide financial support or emotional encouragement. The service gives us an opportunity to recognise these selfless people and thank them for their invaluable contribution to the lives and aspirations of their communities in Somerset," says Johnnie.

"My main focus has been on charities' and volunteer's ability to bolster self-esteem, particularly among younger aged groups, giving them the vision and self-confidence to succeed" he added

The Dean of Wells, The Very Reverend Dr John Davies DL said "This is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the amazing contribution that volunteers make to their communities. The Cathedral is delighted to work in partnership with the High Sheriff to help celebrate and thank all volunteers for everything they do".
