Momentum is building for Wells Cathedral's ambitious Vicars' Close Project, with plans advancing for both the restoration of this medieval gem and the creation of a fresh, engaging visitor experience that will bring eight centuries of history to life. As the team finalises grant agreements and meticulously reviews over 400 design drawings, they're setting the stage to begin work in 2025—an eagerly anticipated milestone for what is Europe's oldest intact medieval street, still serving its original purpose.

Crystal Johnson, project director, emphasised the bigger vision behind the restoration. "This project isn't just about preserving old walls; it's about making Vicars' Close a place where history speaks to everyone who visits," she said. With the team gearing up to invite contractor bids, the project has never been closer to transforming these historic buildings, some dating back to 1348, into an immersive journey through Wells' past.

The project has set its sights on revealing previously unseen spaces within Vicars' Close, allowing visitors to step back in time and explore stories that have quietly lingered for centuries. From medieval life to the evolution of music and social customs, each corner of Vicars' Close holds clues about how Wells has grown and changed. Plans for the new visitor experience include hands-on displays and interactive elements that go beyond a standard history tour, inviting visitors to experience the street as its residents once did, all while learning about the role of Vicars' Close in the community's unique heritage.

In an exciting move to bring locals into the heart of the project, Wells Cathedral will soon be recruiting for roles aimed at community engagement. These positions are designed to allow Wells residents to be an active part of the story—whether by guiding events, hosting workshops, or sharing in the conservation work. "We want the people of Wells to feel a personal connection to Vicars' Close," Johnson said. "This is a chance to engage deeply with our town's history and play a role in its preservation." Volunteer opportunities will also be available, from researching local history and recording oral stories to supporting visitor events that showcase this beloved corner of Wells.

While securing the future of Vicars' Close is no small task, the project has already made significant strides, with £5.4 million of the £7 million budget secured, including a substantial £4.4 million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. As they push to raise the remaining funds, the cathedral is inviting the community and heritage enthusiasts alike to support this unique vision.

With work set to begin in 2025, the Vicars' Close Project promises to preserve this exceptional place while making it accessible and meaningful for new generations. "Vicars' Close has seen more than six centuries of history unfold," Johnson added. "Now, it's time to make sure it remains a vital part of Wells' story for many more."
