Work is underway to transform the former M&Co store on Wells High Street into a new branch of Poundland.

Last week we reported that the budget chainstore had been advertising positions for a store in Wells, but that the company did not respond to requests asking if they were coming to the city.

But today, tradesmen have been spotted installing new Poundland signs on the shop's windows, confirming suspicions that the budget variety store is moving in.

The news has received a mixed reception from Wells residents on social media.

One local said, "I've probably got an unpopular opinion here but I'm quite glad we're getting a Poundland. It'll create more jobs for locals and it's one less empty shop. Not everyone in Wells can afford to shop in the more expensive shops here - this might make all the difference for someone on a low budget."

Another resident was equally positive, stating, "Poundland is great!!! The clothes are good too - absolutely delighted for this to be coming."

But one disgruntled resident questioned, "Do we really need ANOTHER £1 shop?" while another emailed Nub to say: "Putting a Poundland dead centre of the High Street in such a beautiful and historic small town, which already has approx 7 or 8 charity shops, is really lowering the tone of this beautiful tourist destination."

An official statement from Poundland is yet to be released.
