A group of horses and ponies will take to the streets of Wells on Sunday, September 15, as part of an initiative to educate motorists on how to safely pass horses on the roads. The event, organised by Lady Sharon Carter, will support the nationwide Pass Wide and Slow campaign.

The riders will gather in Market Place at noon before riding through the city centre, including a route to Cathedral Green. The aim is to remind drivers that when passing horses, they should slow down to no more than 10mph and maintain a two-metre distance where possible.

"We have a number of horse riders, carriage drivers and more riding from the market square round to the Cathedral Green to promote safety for horse riders and carriage drivers," said Lady Carter. "Please do come along and watch, and meet us, we are happy to chat with you, and meet our amazing horses."

Deputy Mayor Councillor Louis Agabani will officially start the ride. The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance is also expected to attend.

Lady Carter highlighted the importance of educating all road users on the need to slow down and give space to horses and riders. "Too many horses, riders, bikers, pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers are killed on our roads today. Thirty seconds of your time will save a life by slowing down and giving us room," she said.
