A quiet ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima took place on 6 August at the moat of the Bishops Palace in Wells.

Organised by the Mid-Somerset Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace group, the annual candle float drew attendees from across the region, including the mayors of Wells, Glastonbury and Street, and the MP for Wells.

At dusk, paper lanterns painted by children from Hiroshima were lit and set afloat on the water, commemorating the victims of the world's first atomic bomb. A minute's silence was held by all present.

Cllr. Louis Agabani, Mayor of Wells, read aloud a letter from the Mayor of Hiroshima. The message expressed gratitude for the event and called for the complete abolition of nuclear weapons.

The candle float continues to be a deeply symbolic part of Wells' civic calendar, uniting communities in remembrance and peaceful reflection.
