Former Wells town crier Len to receive Freedom of the City
By Laura Linham 7th Jul 2026
Former Wells Town Crier Len Sweales is to receive the Freedom of the City after more than 25 years of service.
Len, one of the best-known faces in Wells, will be given the honour on Saturday, 18 July. The award recognises his long-standing work as an ambassador for the city.
During more than a quarter of a century as town crier, Len represented Wells at countless local, regional and national events. He has also supported a wide range of charities through his public role.
The Freedom of the City is a rare civic honour and is being awarded in recognition of what has been described as exceptional service to Wells. For many residents and visitors, Len's voice and presence have been part of the city's public life for years.
Len gave his last cry in Wells Market Place in May, where he was pictured with his family after stepping down from the role. The moment marked the end of a familiar chapter for the city.
The honour will now formally recognise his contribution to Wells and the part he has played in promoting the city far beyond the Market Place.
