Former Wells Town Crier Len Sweales was made a Freeman of the City on Saturday, 18 July, in recognition of more than 25 years' service to Wells and his support for local charities. The honour was formally presented at Wells Town Hall after a special procession through the city with his wife, Rosemary.

The day began when Len and Rosemary were collected from their Wells home by the Wells Community Network trishaw. Mayor of Wells Cllr Denise Denis said she had the "absolute honour" of leading the council in the procession out to greet the couple as they arrived into the Market Place.

They were met by Wells' new Town Crier, Phil Dickson, who gave an "Oyez" to a packed Market Place of friends and well-wishers.

Cllr Denis said he read a tribute to Len for his more than 25 years as Town Crier and for his many acts of kindness and support for charitable funds and organisations.

The title is one of the highest civic honours the city council can bestow, and is reserved for people who have made an outstanding and enduring contribution to Wells and its community. Cllr Denis said Len becomes the 23rd person since 1722 to receive the Freedom of the City of Wells, joining a Roll of Honour that includes a Prime Minister, a member of royalty, bishops and other prominent figures including the recently departed Mary Rand.

Cllr Denis said: "Len Sweales has given an extraordinary amount of his time, energy and passion to the City of Wells over many decades.

"While many will know him as our Town Crier, those who have worked alongside him know that his contribution extends far beyond that role. He has been a steadfast supporter of countless community initiatives and a true ambassador for our city."

Len said the previous 24 hours had been "the most memorable anyone could experience". He thanked the Town Clerk and staff, councillors who had supported him over the years, members of the public who turned out to cheer him on, and his family and friends.

He said: "To all those who have given cards and wishes, and once again the Showman's Guild who mean so much to the city, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

"I am honoured and flattered to be awarded Freeman of the City, and making myself and Rosemary so very, very, happy. See you on the streets in my new role as ambassador."

As a Freeman of the City, Len is entitled to attend civic events and also holds the historic right to drive sheep up Wells High Street.
