Fire crews from across Somerset are tackling a major property fire just outside of Wells this evening (March 12).
At around 7pm this evening three fire engines from Wells, Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet were mobilised to reports of a fire at a property on the A39 Glastonbury Road just outside of Wells.
On arrival at the property at the Sugar Loaf junction opposite Brownes Garden Centre, crews confirmed the property was well alight and got to work attempting to stop the fire spreading using a hose reel jet, safety jet and a covering jet.
The road was closed and a further four fire engines from Street, Shepton Mallet, Cheddar and Somerton were sent along with a water carrier from Bridgwater.
The building on fire is a large domestic property measuring 30m x 25m built from various materials.
The fire is in the roof space between close boarding and tiles. The incident is sectorised and crews are fighting the fire from the front and back of the building using eight breathing apparatus, two main jets, two safety jets and two ladders.
At the time of writing (11.30pm) the A39 was closed to through traffic.
