The A39 remains closed just outside of Wells this morning (March 13) as crews continue to tackle a large property fire.
The road is closed at the time of writing (7.30am) from Stoppers Lane to Woodford Lane in Upper Coxley as firefighters from across Somerset continue to battle putting out the flames.
At around 7pm yesterday evening three fire engines from Wells, Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet were mobilised to reports of a fire at a property on the A39 Glastonbury Road just outside of Wells.
On arrival at the property at the Sugar Loaf junction opposite Brownes Garden Centre, crews confirmed the property was well alight and got to work attempting to stop the fire spreading using a hose reel jet, safety jet and a covering jet.
The road was closed and a further four fire engines from Street, Shepton Mallet, Cheddar and Somerton were sent along with a water carrier from Bridgwater.
The building on fire is a large domestic property measuring 30m x 25m built from various materials.
The fire is in the roof space between close boarding and tiles. Just after 8.30pm a further three fire engines were sent from Frome, Bridgwater and Castle Cary who were on standby at surrounding stations along with an aerial platform from Bridgwater.
At 1am, crews confirmed steady progress was being made, with crews continuing to use breathing apparatus to prevent fire spread internally and also continue fire fighting externally to extinguish hotspots and damping down. All utilities were isolated.
At 5am crews were still at work with breathing apparatus internally fighting the fire and externally.
They were exposing the roof to try and identify any fire spread in the roof space. Crews are still using numerous breathing apparatus, ladders and attack jets. A further pump relief crew was mobilised at 4am.
