Excitement is growing in Wells as a new and larger Lidl supermarket is set to open its doors on the A39 Strawberry Way in February 2025. The development replaces the existing store and expands into the neighbouring site, formerly occupied by Travis Perkins, offering shoppers a much-improved experience.

What to expect from the new Lidl store in Wells

Increased size and space

The new Lidl will see a significant increase in size, with the net sales area growing from 945 square metres to 1,414 square metres. The overall building, including storage and other facilities, will cover 2,269 square metres, providing ample room for a wider range of products.

Location and access

Conveniently situated at the same Strawberry Way location, the store will retain its easy access for shoppers. Positioned close to the Strawberry Way roundabout, it remains a prime spot for local residents.

Improved parking and facilities

The store will offer enhanced parking options, with an additional 46 spaces, bringing the total to 125. This will include three extra disabled parking spaces and 12 motorcycle spaces, catering to a wider range of visitors. Electric vehicle charging points will also be installed, supporting the shift towards green energy solutions.

Sustainability features

As part of Lidl’s commitment to sustainability, the new store will feature solar panels on its roof. These will be designed to minimise visual impact while contributing to the store's energy needs, reducing its overall environmental footprint.

Job creation

The new store is expected to create around ten additional jobs, mostly part-time positions, providing a welcome boost to local employment.

Modern design

The new store will adopt Lidl's modern look, featuring grey cladding, white render, and a stone plinth. The site will also be enhanced with soft landscaping, including turf, trees, and shrubs, helping the store blend into its surroundings.

New infrastructure

As part of the project, a dedicated cycle path will be built to the north of the store, linking with the Strawberry Line project, encouraging more sustainable travel options in the area.

This development is set to enhance the shopping experience in Wells and contribute to the local community. For those interested in more details, the planning application can be viewed on Somerset Council's online planning portal under reference number 2022/0273/FUL.
