Demand surges at Wells Welcome Hub for support services
The Wells Welcome Hub is experiencing a significant rise in demand for its services, primarily from Ukrainians, their sponsors, and other displaced individuals.
Open every Monday from 10am to 1pm, the hub has become an essential resource for those seeking help with the challenges of adjusting to life in Britain. Services offered include assistance with official paperwork, sourcing education for children, job hunting, securing accommodation, and opportunities to learn English.
Iryna, a Ukrainian who has used the hub's services, shared her experience: "Whenever I face a problem, I know I can turn to the drop-in service, and my issue will be addressed immediately or I'll be referred to someone who can help."
Launched in September 2022 in response to community requests for support for families fleeing the conflict in Ukraine, the initiative is managed by the Wells Community Network. It benefits from funding from the central government and support from Wells City Council, the CHARIS refugee charity in Taunton, and Somerset Council.
The hub not only caters to Ukrainians but also to individuals from Syria, Kurdistan, Eritrea, and other nations, aiming to extend its reach to more members of the community who could benefit from its services.
Those in need are directed to the Portway Annexe, where the hub is located.
Anna Tumanova, the hub manager, emphasized the importance of the service: "The value of the Hub's work to its users is immense. We're eager to extend a warm welcome to more individuals in the local community who could benefit from our support, if only they were aware of our existence."
