A coffee morning and information sharing event for those wishing to know more about what goes on in Wells and surrounding areas for people living with dementia, memory problems and Parkinson's in taking place on Wednesday (July 20).

The event at Seager Hall has been organised by Emma Wheat, co-director of Somerset Arts Well. Somerset Arts Wells is a community interest company which runs participatory music projects, including Singing for the Brain – a music group for people with dementia and their carers.

The coffee morning has been organised to share information about the resources and activities in the area for people with dementia. "Anyone can come along," said Emma. "But especially anyone who wants to know more about dementia services in the area. The dementia nurse from the Priory Health Centre will be there, and also Wells Dementia Action Alliance. The aim is just to get information out there, promote the things that are going on in Wells and the surrounding area."

Singing for the Brain launched in January, and provides an opportunity for people affected by dementia to get together for tea, biscuits and a chat, as well as the chance to sing some songs and explore some musical instruments.

"We sing some old songs, and some more modern songs," said Emma. "We do songs with an element of movement, circle songs and drumming.

"It seems that the 'music' part of the brain isn't affected by dementia in the same way. We do call and response drumming – and the rhythms are not simple. It's amazing to watch. And for the carers it's huge just to be able to come and sit next to the person that can't normally even make a cup of tea and see them drumming a rhythm. And week on week people come back, and they remember.

"We have a chat and a laugh and when we are making music you can really see people's personalities come out.

"Every week something quite incredible happens. It's just so moving. It really feels a privilege to be part of it."

The coffee morning will take place at 11am at Seager Hall on Wednesday (July 20).
