The Blue School in Wells is set to reopen its Kennion building after extensive structural investigations confirmed it is safe for use, pending some essential remedial works.

This news brings much-needed relief to the school community, which has faced significant disruption since the building was closed late last year due to safety concerns.

Headteacher Mark Woodlock shared an update on the progress, explaining that the initial closure was prompted by extensive cracking found in the concrete floor beams of the building, constructed in the 1950s. The discovery led to an in-depth investigation, which included load-testing over Easter. These tests demonstrated that the floors could handle more weight than expected without compromising structural integrity.

"Having reviewed all the evidence, the structural engineers are now satisfied that Kennion is structurally sound to reoccupy, subject to essential remedial works," Woodlock said.

The necessary remedial work goes beyond the initial structural concerns. Surveyors have identified additional issues, and the school is currently working with the Department for Education (DfE) to finalise the scope of the required repairs. The aim is to start these works in the autumn term, with an optimistic view of reoccupying the Kennion tower in early 2025, depending on contractor availability.

In the meantime, the DfE will continue funding temporary classrooms in 'Kennion Village,' ensuring that all students can remain on-site without further disruption to their education.

Surplus funds from an extraordinary fundraising effort in January have been used to enhance the school environment. Thanks to the generous support of Orme Architects, who offered their services for free, new designs have been created to add social spaces, improve the Bailey food outlet area, and introduce outdoor table tennis tables across the site, including on the sixth form patio.

Reflecting on the past academic year, Woodlock expressed pride in the resilience and community spirit that have helped the school navigate through these challenges. "We have faced a significant challenge and worked our way through it," he said.
